Lunch Gets More Expensive in Windsor Locks Public Schools
School officials raise minimum lunch prices to meet federal mandates.
Lunch is going to cost more in Windsor Locks Public Schools starting next academic year.
The board of education voted unanimously Thursday night to increase the lunch prices in the district to reach the level required by the federal government.
Business Manager Les Koziara said the minimum amount that a school lunch can be is $2.46, which is the federal mandate. At the moment, the price for lunches at the high school is $2.40 while the price at the other schools is $2.15.
After the 2011-12 school year, the lunch prices will be raised according to the Consumer Price Index, Koziara said.
There are some federally mandated items that are being looked into. These are the requirement there be portable water in all seating areas of the cafeteria and that the milk served has to be 1 percent or less, Koziara said. The milk requirement is already being accomplished, she added.
Koziara also told the school board that foods which don’t meet the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 can’t be served during school hours.
“Cupcakes at birthday time or things like that are no longer acceptable under this act,” Koziara said.
Superintendent Wayne C. Sweeney said, “We have become the healthy food police.”
