East Windsor Schools Closed Again Tuesday

Officials are still working to get the roofs cleared of snow.

East Windsor Public Schools for a third day in a row will be closed Tuesday as crews work to remove snow from the roofs of the three buildings.

School officials were ordered last week by the town building official and fire marshal to keep the buildings empty until a structural engineer could see how the snow was affecting the roofs.  After the inspections, school officials were told to clear the roofs before reopening the schools.

First Selectwoman Denise Menard said she was tasked with finding contractors to clean off the roofs. Finding them was not easy, the town even received one quote as high as $300,000 to clear the roof of the high school.

Menard said she looked into asking for help from the National Guard but state officials said there weren’t enough to do that. The town has already used prison inmates to help clean the housing authority’s Park Hill complex, she added.

On Saturday, 18 contractors and some volunteers helped clear the roof of Broad Brook Elementary School, Menard said. The effort also got help from the Warehouse Point firefighters who used a bucket truck to lift snow blowers on to the roof. On Monday, workers were still removing the cleared snow from the ground around the school, she added.

In Windsor Locks, three of the schools, North Street and South elementary schools and Windsor Locks Middle School will reopen Tuesday. Windsor Locks High School will remain closed as crews clear snow from the roof, officials said.
