East Windsor Public Schools will be closed Friday to allow a structural engineer to inspect the roofs of all three schools.

The inspection is a precautionary measure at the behest of Town Building Official Rand Stanley and Fire Marshal Blaine Simpkins.

Acting Superintendent of Schools Carol Fox said there are no outward indications of structural damage and there have been no water leaks or sagging ceilings.

Board Chairman John Pica-Sneeden said he and Fox had discussed how the snow might be affecting the buildings and had maintenance check on it.

"It was not our decision to close," Pica-Sneeden said. "It was the building official and fire marshal."

Schools will be closed tomorrow, February 4. Nobody is to be inside the schools. Tomorrow, a structural engineer will inspect the roofs of all 3 schools.

If the engineer deems all 3 buildings safe tomorrow, there will be school on Monday and the snow will be removed from the roofs while students are in school. If  there is a problem then school will not reopen until the roofs have been cleared, Fox said.

The central office will be open tomorrow.

Board Member Kathleen Bilodeau said she is very disappointed that the students are once again missing a day from school.

With several buildings in town having roofs collapse or experience structural problems, town officials have been asking residents and businesses to clean the snow off their roofs.
