East Windsor Board of Education Approves 10-hours A Week Tech Position

The school system had been sharing an employee with the town, but the town is not funding that position again.

The is going to offer a 10-hour a week job to technology person whose position shared position between the town and schools is .

The board of education at its meeting last week voted 4-3 to offer the part-time position.

Superintendent of Schools Theresa Kane said the shared technology job was split 15 hours a week for the town and 10 hours a week for the school system. The school system has been paying for health insurance benefits for the position.

The town has decided to hire a full-time person to help with its transition to a new computer system during the next year. They are no longer using shared tech person starting August 1.

Kane said the town paid for the 15 hours and the school system paid the 10 hours plus benefits for the employee.  There is enough work to justify the 10 hours and the hours had been budgeted for before the town decided to eliminate its 15 hours, Kane  said.

Board member Catherine Simonelli said she would be concerned about paying for benefits for someone who only works 10 hours a week. Simonelli said it would be setting a precedent

Other board members like William Raber said they would be in favor of giving the person a transition period with the health benefits.

“It’s a unique situation,” Raber said.

Kane said there are currently paraprofessionals who work for the system 25-30 hours per week who do not receive health benefits from the district. She said the individual was caught off-guard.

“We need to be mindful of our employees and take care of them but we also have to take care of the district,” Kane said.
