A "Smooth Transition" For First Day of School in East Windsor

The three schools openings were delay two days because of storm-related power outages.

Despite a delay of two days because of power outages, East Windsor public schools had a smooth opening Friday, official said.

Superintendent of Schools Theresa Kane said the staff was excited to be back with the students after the summer vacation.

School was scheduled to open on Wednesday, but was delayed after Tropical Storm Irene caused power outages at every school building except East Windsor Middle School, officials said.

Kane, who is in her first year as the head of East Windsor schools, said there is a learning curve for her sat the beginning of the school year. That includes getting to meet and know the students, who have been really friendly, Kane said.

“They don’t just introduce themselves, they stop and have a conversation with you,” Kane said as she visited .

The students owe that to the community they live in and the kind of upbringing they are receiving from their parents, Kane said.

East Windsor Middle School Principal Kimberly D. Hellerich said Friday’s opening was a very smooth transition.

“It kind of seems like we’ve been in school for a while,” Hellerich said.

Friday was also the first day for two other administrators, Edward Teleher, the new principal of , and Terese Duenzl, assistant principal of .  Both were hired on August 11.

Teleher assumes the job that became vacant in June when Liam O’Reilly suddenly resigned for personal reasons. Duenzl takes the job that was opened when Laura Foxx was promoted to Broad Brook principal after Jeanne McCarroll retired.

“They’re hunkering down and getting into it,” Kane said.

Kindergarten students will start their first day on September 9.
