Windsor Locks Manufacturer Among Most-Polluting Sites in State

Ahlstrom Nonwovens, the Elm Street-based fiber composite manufacture, has been named one of the ten most-polluting sites in the state of Connecticut, according to a Hartford Business Journal report citing an annual list released by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

According to HBJ, the EPA's list puts the Ahlstrom site at No. 9 on the list, which was full of manufacturers for the first time in the list's printing.

"We keep looking to increase the efficiency of the product being produced," HBJ quotes Ahlstrom Environmental and Regulatory Compliance Manager Gary Jackson as saying.

According to HBJ, Ahlstrom Nonwovens provides the medical industry with sterilization wraps for surgical equipment and other finishing surfaces for a variety of equipment used in the field.

Despite its high ranking among sites in the state, Ahlstrom "reduced its Connecticut environmental released by 58 percent in 2011, HBJ reports.

2. Covidien (North Haven)
3. Pratt & Whitney (East Hartford)
4. PCC Structurals (Groton)
5. GBC Metals (Waterbury)
