Town Vote on Sexually-Oriented Businesses Set

An ordinance revision regarding sexually-oriented businesses could be ratified in the coming weeks.

There's still one month left before Windsor Locks' moratorium on applications for sexually-oriented businesses expires, but revised town ordinances affecting the operation of such establishments in town could go into effect before the September 15 expiration.

The board of selectmen scheduled a town-wide vote for September 10, Tuesday night, giving residents the opportunity to approve or disapprove the town's newly-revised ordinance regarding sexually-oriented businesses in town.

According to First Selectman Steve Wawruck, details of the ordinance will be finalized before the September 10 meeting.

The moratorium was approved by the planning and zoning commission in March in response to uproar over an application to transform an Ella Grasso Turnpike pool hall into a gentlemen's club, and in an effort to give town officials time to revise out-dated regulations for such establishments.

Residents, local businesses and town officials have not been shy about their opposition to the application for Mark Kulungian's Pool Table Magic to become a gentlemen's club.

Neighboring businesses wrote numerous letters to the town conveying their opposition to the proposal.

Additionally, Wawruck said the proposed business doesn't fit in Windsor Locks, adding that the nature of business and clientele would hinder current attempts to curb criminal behavior on Rt. 75.
