Other facts

I have been an active community servant in East Hartford. Serving in the Lions Club since 1983 and a variety of community groups including the executive board of child plan, the Patriotic Commission and Chair of the Building Utilization Task Force.

As Senator I have been instrumental in increasing school aide, keeping local property taxes down while supporting education.

As Chair of the Commerce Committee at the legislature, I am recognized as the preeminent authority on economic development and job creation. Some of the major legislation in that area I have been involved in are the recent job incentive programs which are proving to be enormously successful, the angel investor tax credit to help create new companies, and bringing the technical and scientific capacities of our universities to local businesses. I was instrumental in the reorganization of Bradley International Airport and in the stem cell initiative which laid the groundwork for the Jackson Lab move to CT.

I have worked tirelessly for jobs within my district and have brought dollars to help maintain those jobs when appropriate. For instance, I was able to obtain $4 million to repair the RR bridge between Hartford and East Hartford which serves over 800 jobs in EH, SW and EW.

I have helped the communities I serve in a variety of ways, from getting library additions built to getting roads repaired. I have an abiding interest in history and saving the best of our state's history, like the Pinney House in Ellington and the Huegenot House in East Hartford.

I continue to be concerned about the most vulnerable in our society, the poor the elderly and the infirm and continue to work to insure an adequate safety net for these people. The environment is directly related to our quality of life and this year I was given a 100% rating by the League of Conservation Voters for my voting record.

I believe in the rights of people to collective bargaining in both the private and the publlic sectors. I am dissapointed and extremely frustrated by the inaction to deal with our problems on the federal level and am proud of the fact that our legislature generally works, although I believe a unicameral legislature would work better.
