Two Men Arrested in Sunday Traffic Stop That Resulted in an Extensive Search

The passenger fled from the car into a wooded area where several police took several hours to locate him.

Two men were arrested Sunday after a routine traffic stop on I-91 in Windsor Locks when the passenger fled from police causing an extensive search of the area.

Justin T. Cleary, 29, of 95 McKinley Ave., Norwich, and Richard I. Mayo, 27, of 39 Liberty St., Pawcatuck, were both charged with disobeying the signal of an officer and interfering with officer. Both were released on cash bonds and had scheduled appearances in Enfield Superior Court Monday.

Police said the car was stopped on northbound I-91 between Exit 42 off and on ramp in Windsor Locks because a motor vehicle violation around 9:40 a.m.. While police were interviewing the operator, Mayo,  he began struggling and the troopers placed him into custody.

The passenger, Cleary, then jumped out of the car, grabbed a duffle bag from the rear of the vehicle  and fled into a wooded area nearby with troopers in pursuit. The incident resulted in an extensive search of the area using several officers including some from Windsor Locks, K-9 units and air support, police said.

Cleary was located several hours later in a wooded area, police said.
