Police: East Windsor Woman Charged for Role in Eyeglass Frame Theft

Bernice Tompkins of East Windsor was charged with fourth-degree larceny.

A 47-year-old East Windsor resident is facing a larceny charge for her role in allegedly taking several eyeglass frames from a South Windsor eyewear store without paying for them, according to police.

Bernice Tompkins, 47, of 5 Church St., Broad Brook, was charged by South Windsor police on April 6 with larceny in the fourth degree and was later released on a $1,000 non-surety bond.

She is scheduled to appear at Manchester Superior Court on April 18.

Tompkins’ charge stems from a January 2013 complaint in which store staff members noticed that several pairs of eyeglass frames were missing after Tompkins had visited the store, according to police Sgt. Scott Custer.

Surveillance video showed that Tompkins entered the store with a male and, while Tompkins distracted the clerk, the man took several pairs of frames, Custer said.

Officers were later able to identify Tompkins as one of the suspects and obtained an arrest warrant for her, Custer said.

In an e-mail, Custer confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
