East Windsor Police Apprehend Enfield Man Wanted For Auto Theft in East Hartford

The man allegedly hit a South Windsor police cruiser while he was being pursued, East Windsor police officials said.

 

A 30-year-old Enfield man faces larceny charges after allegedly stealing a car and hitting a police cruiser while he was being pursued.

Derek J. Schumann, of 59 Sharren Lane, Enfield, is charged with second-degree larceny and sixth degree larceny. He was being held Wednesday by East Windsor police on a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Enfield Superior Court Thursday.

According to a press release, the received a police hotline request at 12:31 p.m. Wednesday from South Windsor Police that they were pursuing a stolen motor vehicle that had hit one of their cruisers. East Windsor officers responded to the area and searched for the car, police said.

The East Windsor officers located the vehicle parked behind 35 Kreyssig Road in East Windsor. They the pursued the suspect on foot and captured Schumann, police said. Other individuals in the area were detained and released after questioning.

South Windsor police arrived on the scene, arrested Schumann for various motor vehicle charges and released him to East Windsor’s custody. He was then charged with stealing the 2005 Honda Accord he was found in, and stolen license plates, police said. The car had been reported stolen on Tuesday in East Hartford.

Police also learned that Schumann had two outstanding failure to appear warrants, one in Bloomfield, and one in Bristol.
