East Windsor Emergency Management Department Seeks Volunteers

The department is revamping plans and strategies for emergencies and disasters, and needs volunteers to help devise, coordinate and implement those plans.

East Windsor’s Emergency Management Department is recruiting volunteers to help plan and coordinate the town’s efforts during emergencies and disasters.

Police Chief Edward DeMarco Jr., newly appointed director, said the department’s main role is strategic planning for emergencies. Currently, the department is updating plans for shelters, warming centers and other logistics during emergencies.

In conjunction with the State of Connecticut, East Windsor public safety agencies, private organizations, businesses, and the public the agency work diligently to protect the community during disaster, catastrophes, and emergency events. The mission of the agency is to accomplish that goal through the development and maintenance of emergency plans, conducting disaster exercises, maintaining emergency communications, operating shelters, fielding specialized response units, and practical reality-based training.

“It doesn’t function properly without volunteers,” DeMarco said.

An open recruitment meeting is being held at 2 p.m. January 26 in the town hall annex, 25 School Street.

The only requirement for volunteers is that they be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen, DeMarco said.
