Explosions Fuel Early-Morning House Fire in Windsor Locks

Members of the Windsor Locks Fire Department responded to an early-morning fire on South Main Street Thursday.

According to Fire Chief Gary Ruggiero, the department received a call for service around 2 a.m.

Crews arrived on the scene to the sound of explosions caused by firearm ammunition stored in the home, causing some complications for firefighters in their efforts to put out the fire, Ruggiero said.

In addition, firefighters' efforts were complicated by the age of the home and its distance from the road, according to Ruggiero.

Despite complications, all occupants of the home made it out safely, Ruggiero said, adding that all firefighters and emergency personnel remain safe, as well.

Ruggiero said the cause of the fire and the area in which it started are currently undetermined.

The Windsor Locks fire marshal responded to the scene Thursday morning and began an investigation into the fire's source.

Several area departments assisted in the firefighting effort, including Windsor and Enfield.
