Sunny Day Thursday, Lower Flags to Half-Staff,

Five Things for Thursday.

 

1. Say hello to Thursday, it will be a sunny day with a high temperature of 83 degrees, according to The Weather Channel. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low temperature of 56 degrees.

2.The East Windsor Board of Education approved a new mission statement for the school district Wednesday. It says:
will provide a high-quality, comprehensive, and meaningful education for all students within a safe and nurturing environment. Each student will be treated as an individual and taught to work positively as a member of a group and as a productive member of society. Our goal is for each student to meet or exceed the Connecticut Department of Education goals in all curricular areas. Our guiding principle: Inspiring Growth. Achieving Success.

3. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, following a proclamation by President Barack Obama, today ordered U.S. and Connecticut flags to fly at half-staff until sunset on September 16 in honor of Ambassador John Christopher Stevens and the American personnel who were killed in Benghazi, Libya yesterday.
 
“Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families, friends and colleagues of Ambassador Stevens and the American personnel who were killed in this brutal attack,” Malloy said in a statement.


4. On This Day in: 1788, the Constitutional Convention decided that the first federal election was to be held on Wednesday the following February. On that day George Washington was elected as the first president. In addition, New York City was named the temporary national capital; 1970, the first New York City Marathon took place. Fireman Gary Muhrucke won the race;  and 2001, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell named Osama bin Laden as the prime suspect in the terror attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Limited commercial flights resumed in the U.S. for the first time in two days.

5. The Annual Windsor Locks October Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 14, 2012 at .  Highlights will feature a food, crafts, vendors, free pony rides & activities for kids, pumpkins, live music along with a Farmer's Market and entertainment for all ages. To view flyer, click.
