Lincoln's Birthday: What's Open, What's Closed

Unless it's a state office, assume it's open in Connecticut on Lincoln's Birthday, Feb. 12, 2014.

Connecticut state government and some other states close state offices in observance of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, but hardly any other government or organization does.

Lincoln, the Great Emancipator and 16th president of the United States, was born on Feb. 12, 1809 (205 years ago).

Here's what's open and what's closed for Lincoln's Birthday:

CLOSED:

State of Connecticut offices, including:

  • Connecticut Lottery offices
Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles major offices have this schedule from Wednesday through Monday:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 12 – CLOSED for Lincoln’s Birthday
  • Thursday, Feb. 13 – 9:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 14 – 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (early closure for Washington’s Birthday)
  • Saturday, Feb. 15 – CLOSED (Washington’s Birthday)
  • Monday, Feb. 17 -- CLOSED (as they normally are)

OPEN:

Nearly everything else, including:

  • Local government offices (with exceptions -- Bethel, for instance, is closed on Wednesday)
  • Libraries: Some open, some closed (Be sure to call ahead or check your library's website)
    • Public schools (although some are on winter break this week)

Banks, under Connecticut law, are allowed to remain open on a holiday if they notify their customers beforehand by posting information in their lobby or office. In practice, all or nearly all banks in the state are open for Lincoln's Birthday, including TD Bank, Bank of America and People's United Bank.

Correction: This article originally said state Department of Motor Vehicles offices would be closed Friday. They'll be open. Added information about their singular schedule has been added to this article.

What's wrong with this picture? Government closed for the day, schools open, private industry working. Perhaps it's my age, but I recall several years ago Lincoln's and Washington's birthday holidays were combined into one holiday-President's Day?

Correct, Ted: Bethel town government is closed for Lincoln's Birthday: http://www.bethel-ct.gov/content/6728/6732/default.aspx

Hi Ed -- the federal government recognizes the holiday only as Washington's Birthday and others have called it Presidents Day. I think Lincoln's Birthday has long been uncomfortable in the South, so I assume it's been considered too "controversial" for a federal holiday, which (to give my rarely given opinion on Patch) is shameful.

There are two Feb. 15ths when I'm tired. I need the second one to catch up. Monday, Feb. 17th is now dated correctly (I've perked up a bit since last night.)
