Museum Hosts Ice Cream Social

    The East Windsor Historical Society will hold its annual open house and ice cream social at its Scantic Academy Museum, 115 Scantic Rd., August 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will feature free music, ice cream, children’s activities, and museum tours.
    Society President Michael Hunt said the program, sponsored by Southern Auto Sales, is part of the current membership drive and is designed to make people more aware of the society and its museums, which house hundreds of items representing all periods of East Windsor history. The buildings, which are open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, include the 1817 academy, a  barber shop and a probate court moved from elsewhere in town, and a scaled down tobacco shed holding agricultural and other large equipment.
    Recent acquisitions include a rare 1768 document signed by the town’s earliest selectmen, elected shortly after East Windsor separated from Windsor; a desk from an old town district schoolhouse, photos of local service men and women collected at the end of World War II; 17th century documents donated by the Ellsworth family, one of the first to live in the area; and 1930-50 photos of the Broad Brook Mill.
    The program will also feature the North Street Barbershop Quartet and an antique fire truck from collection of the Connecticut Trolley Museum of Warehouse Point . The event may be postponed in case of severe weather. For more information, call 860-265-3425.
