10K Walk Supports Allied Sports & Recreation Programs

Allied Rehabilitation Centers in Enfield will hold a 10K Walk on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Asnuntuck Community College track. The event will raise money for sports and recreation programs at Allied for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from 14 towns throughout north central CT.
    Walkers who collect at least $25 in pledges will receive a t-shirt, lunch and water. Businesses, organizations and individuals are invited to purchase sponsor signs, which will be posted around the track. Pledge and sponsor forms are available from Allied Rehabilitation Centers at 3 Pearson Way, across from DMV in Enfield.     More than 140 athletes, partners and coaches from the north central region participate in Allied’s sports training program. They compete in Special Olympics events at regional, state, national and World Games levels. An Allied contingent will be traveling to New Haven in June to participate in the CT Special Olympics Summer Games.
    Allied’s recreation program offers young adults the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of social and leisure activities. Groups have attended New England Patriots football games, UCONN men’s and women’s basketball games, concerts, comedy clubs and other recreational activities.
    There is no state funding for after-hours or weekend sports and recreation programs. Instead, Allied relies on fundraising activities to enhance the lives and experiences of participants.
