Black bear sightings have continued to increase in Connecticut since the 1980s
when the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division
first had evidence of a resident bear population. With the number of bears
increasing in the state, it is important for residents to learn the facts about
black bears and how to coexist with them.   Felicia Ortner, a Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast, will appear at the library on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30 PM.  She will dispel some of the myths associated with bears, provide natural history information, and talk about some of the results of the black bear research conducted by wildlife biologists in the state. 

Windsor Locks Public Library will be closed on Monday, October 8 for Columbus Day.  Please use the book drop only if absolutely necessary.  Any items that say they are due on October 8 are actually due on October 9!

On Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30, John Jacob Haksteen, MD will be in the Community Room to share details of his new book, "Searching for Power."  As a practicing psychiatrist for 38 years, Dr. Haksteen, a Windsor Locks resident, decided in 1998 to construct an understanding of the soul, eventually leading him to question how and where humans search for power. In his book he traces the
concept of power through human history, looking at cave pictures, stories,
leadership, cultural customs, logic, knowledge, and consciousness, ending with a
discussion of how power is used and abused and his hope for the future. Copies
of Dr. Haksteen's unique book will be available for sale and signing after the
program.

Our favorite local culinary talent, Chef Renee', will be back at Windsor Locks Public Library on Wednesday, October 24 at 6:30 PM to help us celebrate CT Food Day.  This program will feature fall comfort foods, seasonings, and cooking tips.  We are taking registrations for the CT Food Day program now, so sign up soon.  Chef Renee' is POPULAR so her programs fill up fast.


Our Fall book sale will begin on Saturday, October 20.  We are busy right now organizing hardcover and paperback fiction, DVDs, music CDs, videos, and more for the sael.  It's a perfect time to stock up on Winter reading (although we still want you to come to the library and check things out!). Our book sales are an important fundraiser for the library, allowing us to purchase materials, databases, and technology above and beyond what we could otherwise afford.  Your support is greatly appreciated.
