Five Things for a Thursday.

 

1. Hello Thursday, there will be a 70 percent chance of rain with a high temperature of 70 degrees, according to The Weather Channel. Tonight will also have a 70 percent chance of rain, and a low temperature of  55 degrees.

2. On This Day in: 1535, the first complete English translation of the Bible was printed in Zurich, Switzerland; 1648, the first volunteer fire department was established in New York by Peter Stuyvesant; 1893, the first professional contract was signed by Grant Dibert for the Pittsburgh AC; 1895, the first U.S. Open golf tournament took place in Newport, RI. Horace Rawlins, 19 years old, won the tournament; 1931, the comic strip "Dick Tracy" made its debut in the Detroit Daily Mirror. The strip was created by Chester Gould; and 1987, NFL owners used replacement personnel to play games despite the player's strike.

3. The annual Scout Food Drive for the Five Corner Cupboard in East Windsor will take place with Geissler’s Paper Bag drop off on Saturday and pick up of your donated canned goods around 8:30 a.m. on October 13.  If you would prefer to drop off donations personally on October 13 you can do so at the Scantic Church between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

4. The American Legion Post and Auxiliary of Windsor Locks is holding its next breakfast gathering from 8:30 a.m. 11 a.m. Sunday at Memorial Hall, Elm and Main streets. All Post and Auxiliary members, their families and friends are invited to attend.

The menu will consist of juice, French toast or pancakes, sausage, and coffee or tea. The cost is $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12 years old. No tickets or reservations are necessary.

The Auxiliary, as part of its membership drive, is offering a free breakfast to anyone who joins or renews their membership.


5. The East Windsor Chamber of Commerce will be holding a mini trade show at its next business after hours from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. October 24. The event will benefit the East Windsor Education Foundation and will be held Baymont Inn and Suites.

Chamber members can buy a table/booth for $25 which will be donated to foundation, which provides grants to educational opportunities to East Windsor school system and beyond.
