Sight Line Issues the Biggest Concern After Blizzard in Windsor Locks

First Selectman Steve Wawruck said the town is using four crews to create safer conditions for motorists and pedestrians throughout town.

Five days after the blizzard dumped up to three feet of snow on Connecticut, towns across the state continue to struggle to clear snow and return to business as usual. Such is not the case, however, in Windsor Locks, where crews have been working diligently to clear main roads as early as Saturday, according to the first selectman.

Despite the success of the town's response to the storm – the public schools reopen on Tuesday, for example, albeit with a two-hour delay – there are still obstacles to be faced, Windsor Locks First Selectman Steve Wawruck said.

The biggest obstacle right now is the sight line issue along the roadways, Wawruck said. The clearing of roads and parking lots have enabled residents to move about town and businesses to open, but the piles of snow have created some dangerous situations for motorists attempting left or right turns into traffic.

According to Wawruck, the town has deployed for crews to take care of the high snow piles on street corners and sidewalks blocked by snow when plows blew through.

The crews — three payloaders, a snow blower unit and four dump trucks — will be spread throughout the town for the remainder of the week, knocking down corners and taking the snow to "isolated parking lots," Wawruck said.

The light at the end of the tunnel is in sight, but it's only come after what Wawruck said has been a couple of months worth of work for snow clearing machines in just a few days.

Plows have had to remain running continually, requiring time for regular maintenance throughout the day, he said.

According to Wawruck, the town will continue to use all four crews across town throughout the week. "We'll work until it's done," he said.
