Cooler Friday Weather, Pig Roast at Warehouse Point FD Saturday, Paddle Down Scantic River Sunday

Five Things for a Friday.

 

1. Hello, it’s Friday and the sky will be cloudy with a high temperature of 53 degrees, according to the Weather Channel. Tonight will be clear with a low temperature of 29 degrees.

2. On This Day in: 1492, Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, sighted Watling Island in the Bahamas. He believed that he had found Asia while attempting to find a Western ocean route to India. The same day he claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain; 1892, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Columbus landing the original version of the Pledge of Allegiance was first recited in public schools;  1938, filming began on "The Wizard of Oz,” and 2000 - In Aden, Yemen, the USS Cole, a U.S. Navy destroyer, experienced a large explosion while refueling. The explosion was the result of a terrorist attack using a small boat. Seventeen crew members were killed and at least 39 were injured.

3. The East Windsor American Heritage River Commission is holding its Fun Fall Paddle at noon on Sunday. It will start at the Melrose Bridge with participants paddling down the winding river trail of the Scantic River and end at Cemetery Road.

Canoers and kayakers must bring their own boats, personal flotation devices, paddles, and water/snacks. The journey  takes about 3.5 hours, weather and water conditions permitting.

4. The Warehouse Point Volunteer Fire Department is having a pig roast fundraiser from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. The pig roast will be held rain or shine. BYOB

5. The annual Scout Food Drive for the Five Corner Cupboard in East Windsor will continue with the pick up of your donated canned goods around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.  If you would prefer to drop off donations personally on Saturday you can do so at the Scantic Church between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

For homes who were missed during the bag distribution, you can still make a donation by leaving a bag out by 8:30 am on Saturday. If it's not picked up by 10 a.m. you can call either Kevin at 860-944-8149 or the church at 860-654-0590 to arrange a pick up.
