Neighbors Join Fight Against Proposed Gentlemen's Club

Windsor Locks residents and neighboring businesses have not been shy about their opposition to an application to transform Ella Grasso Turnpike's Pool Table Magic into a gentlemen's club.

Windsor residents joined the fight Monday night.

Bonnie Karkowski, who lives just down the road from Pool Table Magic on Rt. 75, notified the town council of her concerns and a petition she's started.

"I'm worried about the crime the business would bring to the area," Karkowski said after the meeting.

Displaying a recently-drafted petition bearing nearly a dozen signatures, Karkowski argues that such an establishment would have a negative effect on the quality of living in Windsor and Windsor Locks.

In addition, she said, the establishment would do nothing but promote the negative treatment of women, and it would corrupt an area full of family-friendly establishments.

"Homewood Suites and Wendy's are right next door. Those are family places," she said.

Homewood Suites is one of the local businesses that have expressed opposition to Pool Table Magic owner Mark Kulungian's application, saying its clientele would be put off by the nature of proposed entertainment.

In several letters to the town, Homewood Suites pleaded with Windsor Locks officials to take all possible steps in preventing the gentlemen's club from opening.

Windsor Locks First Selectman Steve Wawruck has been vocal as well, saying the proposal could hinder local police efforts to curb drug and human trafficking in the area.

Kulungian's application is scheduled for a public hearing at Windsor Locks town hall on July 8.
