Gov. Dannel Malloy visited businesses in East Granby and Wethersfield on Tuesday to speak about the importance of investing in small business and higher education.

Malloy made his first stop of the afternoon in East Granby at Nufern, the first company to benefit from state tax incentives related to the development of the Bradley Development Zone in June 2012.

Nufern, which designs and manufactures specialty optical fibers, fiber lasers and amplifiers and sells them globally, received the incentives to expand its facility from 65,000 to 95,000 square feet.

"We're lucky out here in East Granby to have businesses like Nufern," said state Rep. Elaine O'Brien (D—61st District).

Nufern boasts that 11 percent of the company's staff hold PhDs and approximately 50 percent have higher education degrees. Malloy said this is the type of small business Connecticut needs.

"We're certainly appreciative of the governor's support," East Granby First Selectman Jim Hayden said. "This is a tangible success of the Bradley Airport Development Zone."

Malloy was also scheduled to visit Payveris in Wethersfield before attending the 2013 Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Awards at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain Tuesday night.
