ACC to Hold Candlelight Vigil and “In Hope of Peace” Coffee House

On Monday, March 5th, Asnuntuck Community College, located at 170 Elm Street in Enfield, will hold a candlelight vigil for peace and to honor our troops, followed by an evening of poetry and music celebrating peace.

Asnuntuck held its first poetry reading for peace in September 2002, to commemorate the first anniversary of 9/11, followed by an April 2003 coffee house “In Praise of Peace.”  The college held its first candlelight vigil for the safe return of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan in September, 2004.  Since those first events, the college has held a candlelight vigil for peace and the safe return of our troops, together with a coffee house celebrating peace, each March and each September.

The candlelight vigil will be held from 6:30-7:00 PM outside the front entrance of the college.  At 7:00 PM, the “In Hope of Peace” reading will begin in the Coffee House in Café II, with guitar music and songs by Asnuntuck English Instructor Joe Finckel. The music portion of the program will be followed by Asnuntuck students, faculty, and staff reading their own poems and poems by others, all with a focus on peace.  The formal reading will also include poetry readings by Asnuntuck graduate Sherylle Roberson-Hutchings’s Youth Group—Café Sisterhood/Book Club for Girls.  Following a break, there will be an open mic until 9:00 PM, so that others may share their poems and music about peace, as part of our collective healing and hope for a peaceful world.
