Seeking Inner Calm And Balance Through Chair Yoga

Every Tuesday afternoon as many as 25 people join Nora van Houten as she leads a chair yoga class at the . The class began in August 2009.

van Houten said she follows the methods of Lakshmi Voelker. Members of the class have visited tyhe Kripalu center in Lenox, Mass. where they got a more enlightened underdstanding of what they atre doing.

Class member Lucille Kessler said the exercises in the class help participants relax, improve their flexibility and ease the pains of ailments such as arthritis.

The class is offered for free and at the senior center because yoga is an exercise that the participants might not have experienced otherwise, van Houten said.

Thank you Larry Smith for great photo journalism of this important senior activity. I added a short snippet of a video showing Steve and Nora demonstrating double chair yoga. Nora has just begun a Thurdsay class on meditation that is a supplement to her chair yoga classes. My plans are to take the Lakshmir Voelker Chair Yoga intructional class in April, and I will keep you informed when I become certified. Bob Lyke
