Patch Tours Memorial Hall in Windsor Locks

.

Memorial Hall, at the corner of Main and Elm streets, is one of the most interesting and historic buildings in Windsor Locks.
Dedicated in 1890, the building is a monument to those who went from Windsor Locks and lost their lives in the Civil War.  Now, it’s a monument to honor all Windsor Locks’ veterans who have served in all wars of our country.

Patch takes a tour with Edward Sabotka, an American Legion member and a recent inductee into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame.

After World War II they set up a Grumman Hellcat Fighter plane outside the building as a memorial. If you are standing near the road looking at the building it was on the left side. I remember my Dad giving me a boost and letting me climb up the wings and fuselage and sitting in the Cockpit. They did let you do that in those days. Years later they donated it to the Air Museum at Bradley airport. The rumor was and I’m kidding about this, was C.H. Dexter’s son flew it when he was in the Navy on an Aircraft carrier and had it sent there after the war…When I was in the Boy Scouts we ended all the Memorial day parades there. The same when I was in the Army National Guard. I remember having a few Boy scout meetings in that beautiful building also. That was in the late forty's, early Fifties. A couple of years ago while riding my bike around the building I found the keys to that building on the pavement in the back. I tried the keys in the door and they worked. Later that day I returned them to the Police station...I glad I found them and not some kid….Keep up the good work and don‘t let anybody forget why its there…I have wonderful memories and had a great childhood in Windsor Locks….
