Letter to the Editor: Strip Club in Windsor Locks Would Lead to Sexual Violence

Reader says that opening a strip club in Windsor Locks would lead to sexual exploitation of female workers.

To the Editor:

Sexually oriented businesses go hand in hand with increased sexual violence.  In recent years women have made great strides toward full equality and here in Windsor Locks we are facing one of the greatest situations that will downgrade much of what has been accomplished. A strip club application has been submitted to the Windsor Locks planning and zoning board for a property on Turnpike Road.

It has been shown in study after study that these places victimize their female workers, raise the levels of sex crimes, violent crimes, as well as crimes against property within a one mile radius of the facility. The female employees face occupational dangers including harassment, sexual and physical violence, mental health issues, and drug related issues. Sometimes the supply of women to some clubs can involve human trafficking and organized crime. These women and our community must be protected from this affliction.
