Patch Picks: Haunted Happenings

Some samplings of things to do to enjoy Halloween.

Rails to the Darkside
The hosts “Rails to the Darkside” through the month of October on Friday and Saturday. It includes a bone-chilling ride aboard a trolley and a tour of the spirit-inhabited cemetery and car barn. Remaining dates are Oct. 21, 22, and Oct. 28, 29 from 7-9:30 p.m.

Terror in the Pines
The Shaker Pines Firefighters Association will host their second annual “Terror in the Pines” haunted trail event. The quarter-mile trail, which takes about 40 minutes to walk through, will be full of both mechanical and costumed scary creatures, played by volunteers from the Shaker Pines Fire Department, the CREC Public Safety Academy, as well as some Lakes Associations residents.

It will be on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29 from 7-11 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 30 from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $10, or $8 with a canned food item for the Enfield Food Shelf.

The trail is not recommended for children younger than 10 or those easily frightened. On Saturdays, parents and younger children can go through the milder parts of the trail from 4-6 p.m., and there won’t be any creatures in the corn. Admission is one canned food item.

Graveyard Shift Tours

Reported ghostly apparitions, mysterious bang and other explained phenomena, as well as visits from SyFy’s Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters Academy have led The Mark Twain House & Museum to reprise its popular “Graveyard Shift Tours.” Hear spooky tales and learn about Mark Twain’s own interest in the supernatural.

The one-hour tour takes guests through all three floors of the house, plus the Servants’ Wing and the spooky basement. Admission: $18; members $15 (reservations required), children younger than 16, $13. The tour is not recommended for children younger than 10.

 Original dates have sold out. November 4 has been added. Tours step off at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Halloween Fun
hosts Halloween Fun at South Elementary School Friday (Oct. 21), starting at 5:30 p.m. There will be pumpkin decorating, crafts, balloon animals, a magic show at 6:30 p.m. and children should wear costumes for a costume parade and contest at 7:15 p.m. This party is for children in fifth grade and younger. This is a free event for residents, but registration is required by noon on Friday, please call 860-627-1420.

Haunted Happenings
hosts Haunted Happenings at the East Windsor Reservoir for residents with children up to age 12. Children are encouraged to wear costumes, there will be hayrides, refreshments and games. The event is Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. Rain location is East Windsor Middle School. There will be a candy hunt beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $3 per child, no registration required. Please bring your own candy bags.

Kids Halloween Party
hosts its annual Kids Halloween Party on Oct. 31. Line up for the costume parade from 6-6:30 p.m. at the fire department, 89 Bridge St., East Windsor, followed by a Halloween Party at 7 p.m. at the East Windsor Town Hall Annex at 25 School St., East Windsor. The event is for ages 12 and younger, there will be a costume contest, games, music and candy.
